The SIOT – Società Italiana per l’Oleodotto Transalpino S.p.A. was founded in Trieste in 1964 to manage the Italian section of the Transalpine Pipeline.
SIOT Marine Terminal is located in the Bay of Muggia in the Gulf of Trieste and is the starting point of the TAL system. From Trieste, the TAL Pipeline runs through the Italian region of Friuli Venezia Giulia before crossing the Alps and continuing its journey across Austria to Ingolstadt in Germany where it divides in two, ending in the west near Karlsruhe and in the east near Neustadt, giving a total length of 753 km.
SIOT with an average of 35 million tons of crude oil being unloaded every year, it represents 75% of the traffic of the Port of Trieste, and is the busiest oil terminal in Italy. Crude oil is unloaded at the piers of the marine terminal and passes through four transfer lines to the tank farm of San Dorligo della Valle.
